Sidmouth opened their pre-season warm up for the league campaign with a late arranged game at Chard, replacing Okehampton.

The opportunity was taken to field two new signings, Lewis Hole and Alfie Keats along with debuts at senior level for seven of last season’s Devon Cup winning colts.

Sidmouth started strongly with the forwards in command. Connor Preston opened the scoring with a try under the posts at the end of a move with the ball advanced through several phases. Jake Smith added the first of four conversions. Given the many changes made throughout the game, Jake Smith at fly half did a fine job running the game.

Dan Armstrong, Archie Cruze and Jack Marchant featured prominently in attack as Sidmouth continued to dominate. A powerful run by Cruze produced a second try.

On the half hour mark Sidmouth made several changes, bringing on the youngsters for their first taste of senior rugby. Soon after the restart, one of their number, Scott Henderson, scored following a strong run in which he left three defenders in his wake.

Two young scrum halves, Harvey Green and Charles Edwards shared 40 minutes each keeping the backs supplied with quick, clean possession.

Chard eventually got on the scoreboard with a converted try thanks to some good work by their forwards. Sidmouth replied almost immediately with a well worked move finished off by Sam Basnett to complete the scoring.

On Friday the squad travel to Withycombe for a 6.30pm kick off.
