Match report by James Docherty.
With the first team on a fallow week the Quins took centre stage at the Blackmore as they hosted Newton Abbot II in a rearranged fixture. In front of a big crowd the Quins put on a superb display of running attack rugby scoring 12 tries, including 3 hat-tricks, despite the heavy conditions under foot.
The signs of what was to come were clear from the offset as Sidmouth scored within 90 seconds of kick off as a long clearance kick from the visitors was collected by Harry Guy who proceeded to out pace the entire Newton Abbot back line before feeding Tom Price for the opening score.
A second try was not far behind as a patient build up through the forwards allowed the back line to get into full swing and some neat interplay saw Harry Guy cross out wide.
The visitors were clearly shell-shocked and this was compounded when Price showed collected a cleared ball and took a quick lineout which Alex Clemo-Crosby fed wide to Scott Henderson who put Sam Bassnet in space on the Newton Abbot 10m line. Bassnet needed no second invitiation and showed a clean pair of heels to the covering defence to go over in the corner. 15-0 to Sidmouth.
Whilst the scoreline may suggest otherwise, Newton Abbot were no pushovers and throughout the game had long spells of territory and possession, but their forward orientated game was simply no match for the aggressive Sidmouth defence. After getting some possession deep in the Sidmouth 22, the visitors patiently went through 14 phases without threatening a try before in an act of desperation an attempted wide pass was picked off by Henderson who sprinted all of 95 metres to score under the posts and register a bonus point within the first 20 minutes.
From a scrum on the Sidmouth 10m Price collected his 2nd try of the afternoon as he finished a slick first phase move which split the Newton Abbot defence wide open, Bassnet with some lovely handling for the assist.
The visitors got on the score sheet next after finding some field position through a couple of penalties they showed patience to go 15 phases before their livewire scrum half sniped through a gap to open their account.
With the Sidmouth front 5 of Ned Coles, Neil Barratt, Chris Otway, Tom Butler and Alfie Collins completely on top in set piece and the loose, the Quins had great service and were able to launch attack after attack. After two warnings, with first a 2 on 1 going begging and then Jake Paget just failing to get to a cross field kick, the Quins were back at it as another lovely first phase move saw Bassnet cross in the corner for his second and Sidmouth’s 6th for a half time score of 34-7.
A raft of changes at half time saw Harvey Hannay, Charlie Farrington-Smith, Rabbie Hansford and James Ogley enter the fray, but there was no let up in the intensity or quality from Sidmouth. Some lovely handling from Kyle Baker from the kick-off set Sidmouth moving and only a loose pass out wide stopped Paget from going over in the corner. It wasn’t to cause much of an issue though as the Quins stole the line-out and after Barratt had driven up to the line Olly Marsh was on hand to power over.
Paget recorded his third near miss of the afternoon after skipper James Docherty broke the line in his own 22 before setting Clemo-Crosby loose on half way, the scrum half selflessly sought to draw the last man and put Paget away but the flanker just couldn’t hold on.
After a short lull in proceedings with over 7 minutes passing without a try, the Quins put the game definitively to bed in a ruthless 15 period where they scored 5 tries. First Jack Hembrow showed a lovely pair of hands to send Basnett over for his hat-trick, before another crisp first phase move saw Docherty make ground before feeding Price who beat the remaining defenders with ease to record his hat-trick.
Directly from the kickoff came the try of the day as Marsh picked up a bouncing ball and crashed through the oncoming defence and Clemo-Crosby fed an onrushing Hannay who broke the line and offloaded to Hansford. Hansford put in a short grubber kick which he collected himself before flipping the ball onto Butler who lobbed a pass onto Charlie Farrington-Smith. The young prop barrelled forward, carrying two men with him before turning and releasing the ball to Barratt who popped it off to Hembrow who held his pass just long enough to allow veteran fly half Docherty to scamper under the posts for his first try of the season.
With the bit between their teeth and an ambition to clos the points difference gap on Crediton at the top of the league, Quins were running the ball from everywhere and there was enough time for Henderson to complete his hat-trick the first coming after an powerful break from James Ogley in the centres and the second all his own work as he collected a loose pass and beat 3 men to score.
There was still time for Newton Abbot to add their second try of the day, and it was well deserved after a tough day at the office but one in which they never stopped battling.
The Quins visit Exeter Engineers next weekend looking to maintain the pressure on Crediton and North Tawton above them and will do so full of confidence.
