Whilst the sun was shining brightly in Newton Abbot it was raining tries for the Quins who racked up 12 of them in a thumping victory in their penultimate league fixture of the season.
This was an all action encounter which suited the Quins fast flowing game to an absolute tee and the firm ground only added to Newton Abbot’s troubles as the Quins ran riot.
The first try came within 5 minutes as Sidmouth exerted early pressure, found good field position and then executed a text book rolling maul for Colts skipper Kieran Docherty to cross the whitewash.
Newton Abbot bounced straight back and some indiscipline form the Quins invited the homes side into their 22 and after a few burly runners had made yards through the middle the home hooker crossed under the posts for a 7-5 lead.
The joy was short lived as a fine backs move from Sidmouth saw them go from their own 22 deep into the Newton Abbot half, as the ball was recycled fly half Rob Hennessy broke the line and fed Tom Butler who finished near the posts. Hennessey added the extras.
The next try came from a loose home kick which was fielded by wing Sam Bassnet, he shifted the ball out wide to the left where Lewis Hole carved through the defence and some neat handling saw the ball back with Bassnet who ran it round under the posts to give Hennessey an easy conversion.
Lewis Hillier was next on the scoresheet as he was on hand to sear down the left wing to finish after some nifty work from Jake Paget at the breakdown turned the ball over and caught the home side short.
There was another try to NA through the forwards before Jack Hembrow went over for the Quins after some slick passing across the backline opened up a gaping hole in the defence, Hennessey again adding the extras.
Scrum half Charles Edwards showed a fine turn of speed off the back of an attacking scrum to register Sidmouth’s 6th try as he picked off the base and out sprinted the defence to score out wide. Hennessey added a fine conversion to leave the Quins 38-12 leave at half time.
The home side opened the scoring in the second half with some nice handling creating space for the wing so squeeze over in the corner. This only served to spark the Quins back into life and just as in the first half it was Docherty who burrowed over from close range for Sidmouth’s 7th try. Hennessey adding another lovely conversion from out wide.
It was Hennessey who went over next as the home side made a Horlicks of clearing their lines and the young fly half captured a ball that had ricocheted firmly off a defenders head and he then converted his own try.
The 9th try came straight from the kick off as Luca Manning made yards through the centre before offloading to Hembrow who got hauled down just yards short of the line. Alfie Collins was quickest to react and picked and went to score from short range. Hennessey added another conversion.
Scott Henderson was next in the try scoring queue as he finished off smartly in the corner after some good work from the forwards had set up yet more good field position. The touchline conversion proved just too much for Hennessey.
Hilliar had his second try of the game soon after as Lewis Hole showed great patience to delay his pass to perfection for the fullback to burst through the defence and finish off the move carrying two men over the line.
The home side got their 4th try with a few minutes to go, a decent reward for not giving up despite being on the end of a bit of a hiding.
Henry Sandford rounded off proceedings for the Quins with their 12th and final try to leave the final score at 22-75.
The Quins travel to third placed North Tawton for their final game knowing that win lose or draw they will finish in 4th place in the league. So with nothing to lose and the weather set fair it should make for a great finish to the season.
