Under 8s

As a continuation of the concepts we started introducing in u7's, this year we look to take those a little further, as well as expanding their "rugby brains" and getting the players to try and start thinking independantly.

Specific areas of devlopment this year are:

·         spatial awareness

·         decision making

·         communication

·         tactical awareness

·         attacking and defensive alignment

Whilst these are quite mature concepts, and are practiced continuously throughout their rugby careers, introducing them slowly now does help the players familiarise themselves with the concepts.

From a more skills and technical viewpoint this year, we are also working on:

·         passing - left/right

·         passing on the run

·         changing running lines/angles

·         working in confined areas

·         passing before "contact" (tag)

As we move deeper into the season, we will also slowly start adding a bit of physicality to the sessions, to start preparing the players to begin taking formal contact next year.  A lot of the games we play currently are to help everyone gain familiarity and confidence in the close confines of contact and the hustle and bustle of the close game.  A lot of focus is put on looking for space, working inside and outside their peripheral vision as well as knowing when to keep the game narrow, and to send the ball wide.

We will continue to develop this next year and so on up until they are (hopefully) ready to embrace the world of adult rugby!
