Curry & Quiz Night Success (28/02/10)

Hello Everybody !

Well - the curry & quiz night held last night went down a storm.

We sold out with 80 people in attendance and Duncan & Jill, Sidmouth’s very own master chefs, rustled us up a splendid curry.

At the helm for the night was Dan Goddard ( ably supported by Alexa Baker ) who asked the brain teasers in a 5 round extravaganza. This was duly won by the ‘Jedwood & Vanilla Ice’ team whos only infringement on the night was an overlookable 7 team members instead of 6. But who’s counting !!

The winners took delivery of the recently resurrected Sid Vale Quiz shield & we fully expect to contest this handsome trophy again before the year is complete.
More importantly the winners won a steak meal for 6 ( possibly 7 ! ) courtesy of Mark and Joanna Seward of ‘Sidmouth Hotels’. We would like to thank them personally for their generosity and strong showing in the quiz itself.
Other sponsors included Martyn, Sarah & Julie Fisher of Hunters Moon Hotel and Roger and Tracey Aplin of the Sidford Post Office / Press. Many thanks again.

A special thankyou must go to Buffy Cavin who provided random obscure entertainment on the night plus Linda Coombs and Christina Morgan for raffle sales and book keeping.
Pete Drewett was also on hand to sign copies of his new book and generously made a donation to our fund from their sales. More copies are available upon request.

And so to the business end of the project – the ‘take’. Our initial total was £740 but upon sober recalculation this has now been mysteriously boosted to £830 !!!
A fabulous total I’m sure you’ll agree – and it’s just the start of our entertainment agenda ……

Please stay tuned for our next event and don’t forget – please donate !!!

Best regards

Craig

Appeal lodged against referee abuse penalty (15/01/10)

The Committee have decided to lodge an appeal to the RFU against the penalty imposed by the Devon Discipline Panel for the referee abuse incident which occured after the Chiefs match against Paignton on 16th January.

The penalty, of a £50 fine, the deduction of 10 league points (suspended for 12 months) plus other conditions to prevent future incidents, is regarded as too severe in the circumstances.

The referee's statement made it clear that no players or team officials were involved. However, they would be the potential victims, should their hard work and success on the field be wiped out, in th event of another incident perpetrated by a few irresponsible spectators.

This appeal does not diminish the Committee's strong condemnation of the mindless incident of abuse, which we accept took place. The abuse of match officials can never be acceptable. We repeat our call for all members and supporters of Sidmouth RFC to respect all match officials and show appreciation for the invaluable job they do.

Devon President's XV to provide finale to 125th Anniversary (27/11/09)

Devon RFU President Terry Brown will be bringing a team to the Blackmore on Sunday 18th April 2010 to play the Chiefs in a finale to the Club's 125th Anniversary.

The county selectors will use this match to try out players who are in the frame for the full Devon squad which will contest the County Championships in May.

This match will provide a fitting end to this historic season. That is unless the Chiefs can qualify for a cup final the following week.........
